My .223 AR is too heavy I fear.

The thing with the AR is it is .223 and the class calls for 'Deer legal' for that read 6,5mm and above. There has been talk of a lightweight class for .223's and similar however it has not been finalised yet.
From memory the straight pull SVD is quite light, certainly under 6Kgs with the synthetic furniture and has a 26" barrel, so it should be eligible and would make an interesting choice as well. You can fit bipods to the SVD as well, keep them just in front of the magazine well and they do not deflect the barrel however they do feel a bit odd to shoot like that.
