Remington 700 VSSF

Anybody shoot, or has shot a Remmy 700 VSSF? What do you think?

No, don't have a VS SF but do have a Police in 223rem and a SPS Varmint, that now sits in a H S Precision PST 25 stock with Jewell trigger etc etc.

Like the VS SF mine are both heavy 26" barrels.

Looking at Remington's website...the VS SF also has an H S Precision stock...that rifle looks superb and will shoot very well, so long as you get on with the OEM trigger or can adjust to suit you.

Cheers Rob. It's a Mk1 model so not sure if it has the aramid fibre stock but its too cheap to pass up I think. Be a real shooter once Valerie Rifles blueprint the action. From there, new stock, new trigger and eventually new barrel.

A fella in my LGS bought one a couple of months ago......... nearly 1800 quid RRP!! Added a Wild Dog stock then sent it to SYSS for screw cutting and a mag conversion. Fitted a one piece rail and new rings for his old leupold to on the top. Reckoned it shot fantastically but too heavy to lug around his permission! Sold it back to the shop!!!

I shot one 2-3 years ago, a club member had just got it and was struggling to group at 100m and asked me to have a try. I was impressed with it as an out of the box standard rifle. Low recoil and a crisp trigger with a reasonable weight. Not sure I would want to carry it all day though.

An Armalon tweaked Rem700 still stands as one of the most accurate 1000 yard .308's I have ever shot.

Reading my book of words on accurising rifles...the tuning of the lugs and bolt face will probably improve accuracy further...but for a really noticeable step improvement...fit a Jewell trigger, nothing less. Just be careful how light a pull you get...ie if you intend to hunt with it, a light trigger can be dangerous.

This rifle will spend all its days on the range if I get it so weight isn't too important.

Will know on Monday if I'm getting it.

Good starting gun/starting point for a project Mike but they are not all created equal I'm afraid. I've shot/worked on load development for a few now and some work with any load, some are fussy and some just won't shoot!

If it's very cheap then it's a great platform to use for a custom as the stocks are half decent and obviously Remmy actions are popular for improvement. However, by the time you've had it blueprinted (which means different things to different people) and bedded and a new trigger, barrel and obligatory 20 moa sight rail you won't be kicking the arse off of what you'd pay for a full custom!

Another surefire winner is to try and find one that someone's already put their money into as they will never back what they've poured into it. In my mind a Custom that someone's selling has to be the best way into accurate rifles. Calum Ferguson, Russell Gall, Keith from TGW(sic), Roger Francis often have custom/semi customs for sale with little use.

See if you can get an opinion on this from "The Gun Pimp" as he's written a few articles to this effect before.
