Civilian use of MOD Ranges - New policy

#1 Post by Ginger »

I am not sure if you have seen this http://www.nra.org.uk/common/asp/conten ... RA&id=1296 on the NRA website but I had a quick look and point 10 looks like it will annoy some people.

10. Ammunition Restrictions. All Civilian clubs that use hand loaded ammunition are
to ensure that it falls within the parameters for use on MoD ranges. Civilian clubs are not
permitted to fire tracer ammunition.

Sounds fair to me... and why would a civilian need to use tracer?

Firstly, what's this "need" thing you refer to. And secondly, because they are bloody good fun!!!

(Oh how your "need" will change once you eventually hand in that MoD90!! )
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

Haha, fair one I guess. clapclap

I suppose the tracer ban is because of the increased fire risk. Spent many an hour or twenty stamping the buggers out!

So no more tracer on knock downs. We always adhere to the 1000m/sec limit when on MoD ranges, it would be bad news for the shooter and his club to get kicked off for exceeding the range limits.

It's all fecking nonsense ! Why would tracer be any more dangerous if fired by a civilian over a squaddie?

We are usually told that tracer is ok as long as we extinguish any fires, bloody good fun indeed and tracer is cheaper than regular milsurp too.

That document is clearly designed to reduce civilian use of MoD ranges to the lowest possible level while imposing the highest possible bureaucratic load upon them. What's the practical difference between an MoD RCO card and an NRA RCO card? None. Paperwork for paperwork's sake.

It also makes stipulations that are going to do serious damage to niche clubs. I'm thinking firing of full-autos by Section 5 holders, and field firing area shoots where they use tracer.

It depends. I've not taken a civi RCO course, but I am SA(B)90 qualified and there is a reasonable amount of paperwork that has to be done prior to a shoot being carried out. I know that a lot of MoD ranges now need some MoD paperwork when civi clubs shoot on them (RAMs etc) though and it may be that the use of tracer is banned because of the increased risk that this poses to non-MoD shooters.

What risk is that - apart from a rare chance of a grass fire in summer?

Sim good post.
