After the visit it's usually straight forward if everything is in order. Couple of weeks wait for me in Staffs.

They don't / didn't automatically talk to your doc as a matter of course. They didn't ask mine anything (and I listed medical conditions on my 101)
The above post probably contains sarcasm or some other form of attempted wit, please don't take it to heart.

Mine didn't ask anyone anything - didn't talk to the referees, didn't contact the GP, nowt. 5 weeks from application in post to receiving the certificate.

They will background check the addresses you list on the application against crime reports for the area (i.e. have you been broken into or do police have any records of callouts to your homes during the time you were living there), run you past Special Branch's database of big bad crims, check against "intelligence" databases with your local plod (have your neighbours ever tried to drop you in it and failed - if so, it'll flag up on there) and only if you've declared a medical condition that rings bells with them will they write to your GP.

Incidentally, FEOs hold CTC, SC and DV clearances. Which I didn't know.

The doc involvement was because I had a stroke during the course of the application (I told them I hasten to add !!)

Counter Terrorism Check, Security Check and Developed Vetting.

From the CTC/SC application form:
There are three different types of national security vetting clearance:
Counter Terrorist Check (CTC), Security Check (SC) and Developed
Vetting (DV). Before any such clearance is undertaken the requirements
of the Baseline Personnel Security Standard must be met. Whilst the
information required and the range and depth of checks undertaken at
each level may vary, they are all intended to allow Government
departments and agencies, the Armed Forces and police forces to
assess whether individuals who are to be employed in sensitive posts or
critical functions might represent a security risk either directly or
indirectly.
It seems some police forces insist on DV for certain posts within firearms licensing departments and others don't.

Mine phoned the referees on the day of the visit. He didn't contact my GP but said they would send her a letter asking to be informed if any medical conditions developed which might affect my FAC status. He said this was automatic now. All smooth and quick once the visit was done.
