Another newbie question

#1 Post by londonercsecse »

Hi! Do people get sling fitted to a shotgun? Can you carry it on a range with it? Is this against any health and safety/etc rules? Thx

must say the the only slings ive seen have been on semi-autos in the field.
never seen anyone using them at a shooting ground, I wouldn't have thought theres any law against it,
but I cant imagine it would go down well at a shooting ground.

The only time i've heard of where you're not permitted to use a sling on a shotgun is during a practical shotgun match, and i don't actually know why. Possibly to do with muzzle awareness but never actually asked anyone familiar with the PSG rulebook

They might be a pain in the butt on over/unders but there's no reason why you cannot fit to pumps and semi's - just carry muzzle up and action open and facing OUT so that people can see it's clear.

it's no different from a rifle in that respect, but others may say differently.

Question is maybe, why ?? personally shotguns can be heavy and a sling is as good a way to carry as any. I never had any issues at ranges.

no rules against using slings, they just tend to get in the way thats all.

Muzzle down, flag in (or out depending on range rules etc), doesnt really matter if you have it slung or carry it in hand.

Why not. It's the natural position for a slung rifle or shotgun. Of course there are other carry positions but for convenience and avoidance of doubt why not stick with traditional sling carry method.

As long as it is clear and empty with the action open to view it won't hurt anyone unless you smack them with it.

I have carried my semi and pump using a sling muzzle up, PSG however is a different matter and is carried muzzle down. I was advised to take the sling off in PSG so it doesn't interfere or get caught up.

I was always told muzzle up, for the obvious reason that an accidental discharge would go up and away from you not down and into a leg or foot etc. And yes, any firearm should of course be empty and/or proved safe before carrying but I'm afraid nobody is pefect and accidents do still happen.
