I figured that an appended 'BT' was probably 'ballistic tip' then (with the hollow done to fit the tip in).
These guys need to standardise their naming conventions. :lol:

They are hollow point boat tail.
Made this way as it is easier to get an accurate fill front to back.
The ballistic tip used by hornady Amax just gives a better finish to the point (allegedly).
V max are different internally and are designed to expand but hold together to deliver max energy...which is what the hunter needs.
HPBT are perfectly fine along with FMJ etc on a normal FAC, but I wonder how many coppers not in the know ask the question?
All bullets expand to a point, the difference being capable of expanding or being "Designed" to expand.
Under the various conventions the mill stuff is usually filled from the rear so does not have a hole at the front, but then the arse end is nowhere near as efficient.
Some forces use HPBT for sniper ammo (I believe our .338 LM T is HPBT) and I know my force uses Hollow point operationally in their .308, but that is designed to expand and stop (Fed Lock point?)
So the military are using HPBT for accuracy (not designed to expand) and the Police are using expanding to make sure they do the job to the right person first time.
Wonder how they justify tumbling? Take a file to some issue 5.56 and check out the steel front section...perfect recipe to go arse over apex
