Which AR15 to buy

#1 Post by nellis »

Been thinking of buying a Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 as my first .22LR rim fire. Read a lot about all the different types available and don't want to spend silly money on some of the more expensive options. Still fairly new to this game and it looks to me like my options are Colt, H&K or the S&W. From what I can glean the S&W seems to be the most reliable/liked option by those that have or have had them. Also, anyone recommend a reasonably priced scope or are the sights on the gun adequate for target use?

Grateful for feedback before I take the plunge and fork out for a new one (don't want to buy second-hand). Finally, anyone advise the bset place to buy (ie. cheapest)< I live in Buckinghamshire.

Welcome Nellis,

check out the following threads

http://www.full-bore.co.uk/viewtopic.ph ... lit=spikes

I tried to put all of peoples comments in one place without being bias, I own a Spikes so if it leans that way that is the reason sorry.

What I understand has been said in the forums:

Cmmg - Solid, works no major issues

Spikes - Solid, works no major issues since bolt issue was sorted late 2010 / early 2011 (I dont think they are made for the us market any more as there is more money in centerfire)

Lantac Ravens - Solid, works, Paul (I think I remember correctly) is a good chap but can be hard to get hold of on the phone

Bradley Arms - Solid, works, Mark is seen as one of the best CSR shooters and his product is highly commended but you pay for that financially

All fire most ammo fine (expect my admission above).

I have a Spikes and its fine for me, I like it, but its horses for courses and who you like dealing with, and how much you can spend.

The only real PITA is getting hold of Blackdog magazines, Midway want silly money for 10rd xform mags :(

Does the above sound correct to everyone here?

Cheers for that, I'm holding off on buying an AR right now however as even though my ticket is back I've decided to wait and see how Scott's VZ58 trigger release prices up, if it's too high for my liking I'll probably go for a Lantac TCR, based on reviews, and quality of build.

Hi Nellis smile2

Big vote for the M&P 15-22 :good: Very well made, ultra reliable and more than accurate enough!, going price up here is £595.

I own one it's an excellent rifle the mega arms upper is well built the hera arms lower is very good the ess solutions barrel is good but prefers the heavier bullets. Only critisism is it takes a while break the barrel in but I did know this when I bought it. Summing up good American/German build quality assembled well in Yorkshire. +1 for customer service

Hi,

I can strongly recommend the SW M&P 15-22, It is a little light but with an optic on top it is just right for me (cos i'm a wimp).

And on top of a fun rifle to shoot it gives me the opportunity to wind up the old guard at my club, the looks of disapproval are entertaining.

I have a M&P 15-22, and found it a bit light. So, I filled up the grip and the butt stock tube with some unwanted lead bullets, held in place with some silicone. It makes it feel a little more meaty. Apart from that, I've put at least 1000 round through it in the last couple of months. I've had maybe a couple of jams, and one or two light strikes, (I changed the trigger springs for lighter ones).

I had a PMII on it, but I wanted that for my 9mm, and so was stuck for a scope. As I was also short of cash I wanted something cheap. I went for a UTG / Leapers "1-4x24 CQB Rifle Scope Illuminated Circle-Dot Reticle ". I recon it's excellent value and am in no hurry to upgrade it.
