You could do a lot worse than get a Ruger 10/22. Cheap, reliable and a whole host of add-ons to keep the lad happy for years.
And 10rnd mags if you need to curb his exuberance, and 100rnd drums for the zombies.

May need a little re-bedding. Have half inched the push fit sling swivel studs for my Lantac but you can get these off of the net if you need them. Shoots well off of a bi-pod. Adjustable cheek piece and removable butt spacers.

Only reason for change was that I now have a Remmy 700 in a real AI stock so little point in keeping the .22 one.
