Ruger 10/22 woes

#1 Post by Landy Dave »

I have been having some issues with my Ruger 10/22. What is happening is it is dropping unburnt power in the magazine which then starts to jam after as little of 10 rounds.
I have attached a picture of what it looks like.

What I have done so far is:
- Changed the barrel twice
- Purchased new magazines as recommended by Rude Fat Dog
- Taken it to Rude Fat Dog who suggest buying new magazines as it worked with theirs but not mine
- Tried 4 different types and batches of ammo
- Stripped and cleaned the whole action including bolt and trigger mech many mavanceny times.

I keep thinking just sell it but the engineer in me wont let it beat me.

Thanks in advance

When you say its dropping 'unburnt powder'...are you sure it isn't just the normal muck that all .22s create? Some ammo is a lot worse than others. What brands have you tried?

Secondly, what kind of jam are you getting? Are you saying that the magazine itself won't feed/present the round? Have you tried increasing the spring tension?

Thirdly....is it going into battery properly? Do your spent cases look normal? no sign of a bulge at the case head?

Er

WTF!?!?!

TWO SUGGESTIONS:

1. Strip the magazines, CLEAN them, then re-assemble.
See what lubricant you can use to keep the magazines working longer...they should NOT jam after 10rds!
The blokes I knew in New Zealand used to have the mag stripping as a weekly/monthly routine.
They used silicone based sprays on the inner assembly.
The rotary mag is possibly the only part of the 10/22 that has any positive merit to its design

&

2. KEEP trying different batches of ammo until you find a better one.
FOUR different types of ammo is NOT an exhaustive attempt at fixing the problem.
.22 rimfire ammo is notoriously dirty by design...but some more so than others.

Another possible solution I'd have looked at first - well before changing barrels twice;
What are the recoil springs that are fitted? If they are too weak they may be allowing the action to open too soon.

I have tried Eley club, SK Standard plus, CCI minimag and Geko. Multiple batches of each.

To begin with the magazine will start to jam as all the grit jams up the rotor, normally around the 15 round mark! Then after around 30-40 rounds I will get failures to eject as the cases are jammed in the chamber by a piece of grit between the case and the chamber wall.

Yep it is returning to battery and no sign of bulged or miss-formed cases.

I have also tried replacing the recoil spring, I have tried and standard and a Volquartsen but they made no difference.

Changed the barrel twice?
That seems a little extreme. :o

Have you changed the recoil spring? Just mentioning this as when my recoil spring was tired it also seemed that the magazines were the issue.

The barrel was changed at the recommendation of the gunshop I got the rifle from and it was done for free

Have you tried taking the magazines apart, cleaning them, adding lubricant then re-assembling them?

Grit...
Sounds like NONE of the above ammo is clean enough.
ELEY make quite a few different .22 rounds, I tend to use ELEY PRACTICE in my semi-autos without too many issues (they start to jam/short stroke at at the 250-300 rounds per session mark)
I also like the Winchester .22 ammo.
Lots of brands out there that may make the problem go away.

If I was closer I'd let you have a box of 50 of each of what I have to try them

Is it a match chamber barrel?

Has the head-space been checked? I'm about as far from an expert as you can get but I'd assume incorrect head-space could allow muck past the bolt?

Something is not right and I don't think it is the ammunition.

I would get another 10/22 shooter and swap everything around one item at a time to see if you can isolate the problem part.

It has been a while now but I seem to remember reading something negative about the clear mags. I assume you have tried others with no luck.
