Barrel shortening cost

Re: Barrel shortening cost
Regarding proof, how would anyone know? They don't mark down the length of the barrel as far as I know, do they?
From the Birmingham proof House
"Arms previously proved and bearing apparently valid proof marks are deemed unproved if the barrels have been enlarged in the bore beyond certain defined limits or if the barrel or action has been materially weakend in other respects."
I wouldn't say chopping or threading a .22 would materially weaken it.

Re: Barrel shortening cost
More recent Proof marks include a year stamp so a quick look at the chamber end will confirm the year of Proof and they will know when the muzzle stamp was implemented so be able to tell if the barrel has been modified.
If the barrel is not stamped at the muzzle end this all becomes rather academic...

Re: Barrel shortening cost
Also that assumes the seller admits the barrel has been shortened and or the buyer knows what they are looking at.
Re: Barrel shortening cost
Dave, would there be a record of it being stamped at the muzzle? Unless they all are, or at least recorded, it would seem a bit of a redundant task as it's not mandatory

All details of rifle Proofs are recorded at the Proof Houses however I am not sure if they log the barrel as a single mark or two. Regardless of this they will know when the two stamp system was introduced so they can easily check if the barrel has been modified or not. I will ask the question when I next talk to the guys at the London House.

... but they won't tell Joe Public whether his rifle was proofed there or not - unless you pay for "a full technical examination of your rifle". I tried asking the London house about my No.4 after I suspected Fultons had had the bolt, bolt head and barrel proofed but not the receiver itself. I gave the proof house the rough date (within a fortnight) and the serial number, and asked whether it had passed through as a complete unit.ovenpaa wrote:All details of rifle Proofs are recorded at the Proof Houses
All I got was some bloke trying to convince me to pay him lots of money for a service I neither wanted nor needed. Kept dodging the original question, which I'm sure he could have answered had he been bothered. Useless profiteers.

Re: Barrel shortening cost
Proof is a legalised outrage for printing money for the proof houses that serves no useful purpose any more. Another "can't do" institution.

Re: Barrel shortening cost
I thought they only proof-marked the muzzle end of the barrel if it had been threaded for a moderator, otherwise it doesn't need a proof mark in that position.ovenpaa wrote:All details of rifle Proofs are recorded at the Proof Houses however I am not sure if they log the barrel as a single mark or two. Non of my non-threaded rifles have a proof mark at the muzzle end, but my threaded ones do.

I once saw a beautiful Colt Single Action Army, 1st generation for about 1879 manufacture, with the ugliest proof marks in the work applied to the barrel, receiver and on the outside of the cylinder, for each chamber.....

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?
