What's the problem with them though? Failure to feed/eject, light strike etc..?

my experience is that some (not all) 10/22s need the extra oomph from a supersonic round ...

10/22s are generally unreliable when the recoil spring become worn out. It's a simple blow back action. The spring keeps the bolt closed during firing and returns it to battery once cycled. A shorter/cut spring may very well not close the breech sufficiently for safe firing or induce "bolt bounce" on the return. If a 10/22 doesn't cycle properly, simply replace the recoil spring with a factory/stock weight. Come to think of it, I'm actually not aware of reduced power recoil springs for the 10/22, unlike the other springs of that gun.

I've messed around with the bolt spring in my .22 spikes tactical, I've always found the right balance by experimenting. The only time I've had the bolt not close was when I've tried different mags and they bind against the bolt. From what I've seen so far, I think you'd have to clip quite a bit off before you ran in to trouble.

Given the time and effort of designers and engineers timing a blowback action so that it is safe and reliable "messing around" with the only thing that keeps the bolt closed during firing is, erm..... Just be aware of your responsibilities to those around you whilst you are shooting....

Bear in mind that "bolt bounce" has also been the suspected cause of ND's/full auto in rimfires particularly when considering how a rimfire cartridge is primed. (I can't find a the details of that study at the minute) However, here's a video illustrating bolt bounce with a standard 10/22, with presumably a standard weight, unaltered recoil spring...

Messing around was more an expression than an accurate description, it was all pretty methodical, but very diplomatically put and point taken.

My Anschutz 54 is very accurate up to and beyond 200 yards...there's got to be a reason why they put a 24" barrel on rather than a shorter one...

There is--it is to increase the sight radius and also because potential customers, like you, belive that a longer barrel is better.

I have 3 different recoil springs for my 10/22, came with the Kidd charging handle I got for it.
Low velocity, standard and HV.

I've used the low velocity spring with reliable subsonic round feeding and ejection.
Use the standard for higher velocity as the strongest spring is a bit too stiff for minimags and the likes.
