For me a take down rifle would be one where the barrel/forend is easily removed for transport or storage. Some .22LR rifles are built in such a way that the barrel can be removed and stored inside the stock which makes them ideal for transporting in a rucksack or similar.

David, have you seen the ones on the Buy Now section of Holts? They had a couple of synthetic takedowns pretty cheap.
