problems with investarms 50 hawken

I'm using no.11 caps as per the manual on Investarms site.
But about one in ten do not fire first time.
They always fire after recocking.

At first I noticed that the hammer was scraping the wood and thought this may be slowing the hammer down a bit. But after spacing with a washer it still does it.

Further investigation shows that the hammer spring is not under tension when the hammer is forward, so it is relying on the inertia of the hammer to carry on forwards and strike the cap.

I have cleaned the trigger internals and polished sears etc to see if I can get the hammer moving faster, but not yet been down the range to try it out.

One possibilty I have thought of is using a extended nipple so the hammer will hit sooner.
Are these available? I could try a washer but there isnt much thread on the nipple.

Or another thought is that as the hammer spring uses a rod which seats in a recess, maybe the recess has worn and resulted in less travel.
The trigger / hammer parts do appear to be made of soft steel.

Try droppng a short piece of steel in th ehole, effectively lengthening the rod.

I think that is the next step before replacing with new bits.
Although the hole is only about 2mm deep and 3mm diameter.

Just had a thought... does the recess in the hammer have to be there? Can is be flat?
If I fill it with chemical metal that would mean it would impact about 3mm earlier.

Are you sure the caps are fully seating, if they are little tight and the priming compound isn't seated onto the nipple then the first blow can seat them and the second fire it.

Well, today down the range for every shot I used the hammer to push the cap on a bit.
They don't sit tight anyway and quite often fall off if I turn the rifle on its side.
All seemed well for the first ten or so shots, then I had every other one need recocking.
Then after about twenty shots it failed to fire until the third cock and then the fourth cock!

Ok, so I've just been doing some careful measuring and have put the nipple in a bench drill and put a fine bevel on the edge and polished it up a bit.
Also looking at the nipple whilst rolling it in my fingers ( finnar finnar! :roll: ) I've noticed that the whole thing leans very very slightly to one side! Could be my eyes though.

Anyway I'll have to try again next weekend.... or buy a decent nipple as this one looks like a cheapy.

I did think of trying it out at home, but I think legally I can't do that even if its not loaded.

Problem fixed.

A new nipple fitted and not a single failure to fire with cci or remington caps.

I have noticed though that black powder cloggs up the rifling far quicker than pyrodex!!!

Try car windscreen washer fluid as a pach lube it workes fine in my .45" Investarm.

What make of black powder are you using?

If it is Krankies nutty slack then fouling will be a big issue and will build up quickly.
