The winner and myself (fourth) were using RWS R50, and the guys who came 2 and 3 were using RWS R100...others have also had some success with Lapua Centra X and Eley Tenex.

There's an ongoing debate about the R100; as to whether the extra 60 fps gives it an advantage in the wind, or the fact that it drops out of supersonic before it gets to the target gives it a disadvantage.

The gentleman who won has studied the ammo quite carefully - He batch weighs his ammo, and has found a maximum variation of 0.3 gns...which when you consider that there is only 1.2 gns (ave) of powder in the rounds, and accounting for variation in the case and bullet, still suggests that there could be a significant percentage difference in powder weight even in top quality ammo...anyway, having seen how well he grouped at 200 yards (10 V-Bulls) I'm going to be batch weighing mine next time ;)

Personally I think that most 'top quality' ammo is much of a muchness, and the higher quality control will give an advantage over cheaper stuff...and obviously things like batch-weighing will improve groups even further.

While you can, in good conditions shoot .22lr beyond 500 yards; it does seem to be the maximum practical distance for a competition...one reason being that in a strong wind it's quite difficult to hold the scoring rings...and the other is that past 600 yards the bullet has so little energy and is coming in at such a steep angle that it might deflect off the target face without penetrating it at all...

I shoot RF on the 100m (custom Ruger 10/22 and Sako Quad) and just bought a 22wmr barrel to try RF on the 200m range.
There's a group who come down from not too far from you (certainly closer than Bisley), who have their own .22 Long Range comp (200, 300 and 500) once a year...I'll try and get you some contact details...
More info: Our northern contingent are from the Derbyshire area - The comp they shoot is called The Turbutt shoot (open sights only)...it takes place at Thorpe Cloud range, in Dovedale, just north of Ashbourne, usually on the last Sunday in September.

I'll PM you the names of a couple of clubs in that area who have members shooting Long Range Rimfire.

I know you got the wmr barrel, but you'll be surprised how well standard .22lr shoots at 200 yards.

Oh absolutely; I wouldn't want to be hit by one...

...but the problem is from a 'practical' point of view for a competition - The thing is that at 600 yards plus, it's unlikely you'll be hitting the center of the target where the paper is thin...and it is possible that a bullet could deflect downwards off a more solid part of the target or frame...which would not be good for whoever is marking...
