I've done it again... impulse purchase... problems all round

#1 Post by bigfathairybiker »

So, on saturday I bought a used Rizzinii E. O/U shotty. It fitted nicely, felt nice, looked nice, bores were clean, wood in great condition.
£375 left my pocket.

After a quick clean I noticed that there were different serial numbers on the wood, so probably the reason for it looking good.

Sunday went for a DTL session at Dartford, loaded two, shot two, ejected two. And eject it did, really chucked them out. Placed two more in and attempted to close the gun.

It wouldnt close. After a bit of wiggling, tapping the ejectors with the palm of my hand allowed closure. Fine for next three shots when the fourth didnt fire. Over the course of a box of carts it kept on locking open and failing to fire on the bottom barrel.

Later on with closer inspection it appears that the top ejector sometimes pops out too far.

I have phoned the shop and got the response of "we will repair, replace or refund - your choice".
This is great I thought. But now I have to decide on what to do.
I like the gun, when it worked I killed all the clays. But.... Am I expecting too much from a gun that has seen a lot of use?
Maybe get a refund and save a bit more to get something newer or accept a repair, but Idont want to end up with a money pit.

Any suggestions would be nice.

If they cant fix it and you still have slight issues, would you see it still as a good purchase?

personally, i would return it, before falling in love anymore....

well if the gun is faulty but other wise suits you, let them fix it (obviously at their cost) and then you have a gun that shoots and works.. win - win to me :good: :good:

Refund without doubt and i wouldn't be buying from them again in the future. Doesn't the shop check they guns they're selling to make sure they actually in working order?? :bad:

Good reliable shotgun normally. (I owned one for a few years and loved it,great clay buster.) would be tempted to let the dealer put the problem right and take it from there, mistakes do happen etc. Good luck and let us know how you get on. Regards Chris.

Yep, I'd take the refund and either look for something to replace it or save a bit more and keep looking. Who knows how many thousands of shells it's fired...could turn into a money pit

Thanks for the input guys.

A few questions to answer.. the sales guy several times before and after the sale and when I phoned to tell them of the problem, said "our gunsmith checks all our guns before we put them on sale".
I hadn't mentioned anything about the condition or reliability of it.

I do have a strong pulls towards getting them to repair it, as I believe it could be a good gun if it worked.

But... if they refund in cash or back to my card then this would give me other options... but they could mean refund by the way of a credit note.... ( I've had that happen with something else - not gun related though ).

From what myself and a friend ( Olympic Shotgun Coach ) could see, it will need at least one new ejector and associated "slidey bit of metal that stops it" and also a new firing pin. He also said that weaker ejector springs would make it last longer.

I'm due to drop it back to the shop on Saturday, so I'll let everyone know what happens.

Get rid of it. Add some more money to the refund when you can and buy a better gun.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Update:

Well, Sim, yours and many others suggestions seem the right ones.....

Yesterday morning I removed the gun from my safe, opened it to check clear and the top ejector decided to eject.... I mean really eject... flew across the room, bounced off the wall and buried itself in a box of my gun cleaning kit.

I've taken the gun back and they are initially going to have their gunsmith evaluate it as to if it is worth repairing and will give me a call later this week.

I have been checking today for the availability of spares for the gun.... and according to red-kite.org, who answered my query on a saturday evening! There are no spares except for springs, and a few firing pins. Mr E. Rizzini died a few years back and the factory closed.

So..... If they can repair it so I works fine and will last a few years, I don't mind, but otherwise I will be asking for a refund.

I do have an option open to me, which is my genius toolmaker brother who says he can make a copy of anything. But he takes his time about it as it has to be done between jobs. Oh.. and he is already making a Mosin muzzle brake. :)
