Lastly, because I'm a tart I fitted an AXPS Raptor charging handle - which is great being ambi dextrous, however, due to it being meant for 5.56 / .223 AR's as opposed to 22LR's - means that now occasionally I get the odd brass case stuck in the upper - easy to clear but annoying none the less. There's a fix for this but I haven't done it yet.
Hello,
Can you please point me in the direction of this fix? As I am getting these problems and would like to fix it.
You can use something like milliput to fill in the handle so it matches the profile of the CMMG. basically you just want to make the end of the handle nearest the bolt face into a deflection surface instead of a brass trap. Take the two charging handles side by side and just make the interior of the new one roughly match the CMMG one.
Emotionally yes, I felt the need for more and more tactical innards for my AR.
When I first tried it it used to get stuck cases quite a bit.
Then I fixed it with milliput. No jams.
Then I removed all the milliput so I could put it back in my centerfire, then input it BACK in the .22 with no milliput and to be honest, it's not jammed since.
So I think it's mostly down to your bolt, ejector and ammo. If your gun chucks spent cases towards the top of the upper then you'll need a fix. Mine has been fine for a good few thousand rounds now with what's basically a stock out of the box raptor handle in it.
Ps. You know you're doing it right when you measure your shooting in new mags and firing pins :) I'm on my third firing pin (third one is one of Suffolk rifles improved ones) though still on my first four mags.
