Update:
I bought the adjustable wrench and it works just fine. The only problem I had, was I couldn't secure the gun via the barrel blocks in the vice. The nut was so tight that when I turned the spanner the whole gun rotated. I could probably have tightened the vice a lot more but I got nervous doing that and clamped the receiver instead.
Took a lot of force to loosen the nut, and when it did come free I found a beige residue in the threads, so it was obviously secured with some kind of thread locker.
Anyway the new nut is on and so is the new hand guard.
For anybody else looking to free float the SIG522 hand guard my recommendation is to save money and only get the nut, not the wrench and the barrel blocks that are often sold with it. Instead get the adjustable wrench and secure the receiver in the vice (carefully).
SIG522 Barrel nut: need to remove it

Can you confirm the dimensions of the adjustable pin spanner wrench that you used?
Was it 3/4" - 2" with a 3/16" pin?
I can find many Metric equivalents (4mm and 5mm) but the "Inch" model is much more elusive.
Where did you purchase yours?
