I would rather not use grease if at all possible, shooting these things is dirty enough as it is...

With good black powder and proper loading it isn't that dirty, my muzzle loading guns wipe clean, with Aquoil.
An occasional pass with C2R keeps the fixed carbon at bay.
No scrubbing or pouring water hot or cold over/through the gun.
Barrels are easier to clean than those using nasty fouling jacketed bullets and smokeless powders.
