Sako Quad with two barrels or two separate rifles?

Looking for some advice here everyone,

I have slots for 22LR and 17HMR on my FAC and was looking to buy a rifle for each caliber but have been offered a Sako Quad with 2 barrels and Quad Burris scope at a reasonable price. I'm looking to buy it but wondered what other people thought of the quad as I spoke to a dealer who said that he wouldn't buy one as they were not as good as other Sakos and were not great at holding zero when changing barrels.

I bought my target rifle from this dealer who gave me this advice and is well respected and knowledgeable (no names being mentioned so don't ask!) and I'm not too sure what to do. I've looked online and don't really see any negative comments about the quads, is there anything to look out for and what are other peoples views on this rifle?

I had one a few years ago and found it fine. It would also hold a sub MOA zero between barrel changes. The only reason I got rid of it was I stopped rabbit shooting so it barely got used.

IIRC the only thing that used to be an issue on some guns (not sure if it still is, and it wasn't on mine at the time), was that the extractor claw was more set up for the .17HMR/.22WMR cartridges and it sometimes failed to extract .22lr live rounds (even those with this issue usually were able to extract .22lr spent cases), so it doesn't really affect the function of the rifle, its just if you need to unload it without firing the round. Bit difficult to test in the shop though, unless they'd let you try some dummy rounds through it.

I did read about the extraction issue with the live rounds and read that they ran a reamer through the problem rifles and took a thou off and that solved the problem..!!

Fine little rifles and the best of both worlds, I would not be too worried about owning one.

I bought a used Sako p94s finnfire which was the older version the previous owner had put less than 100 rounds through it then sold it. It would not eject unfired rounds so I found an artical online that suggested the ejector be reprofiled which I did with a dremmel and its been perfect ever since.

For my two pennorth, I would go for two rifles (preferably both Quads, but that might be stretching it.)!!

Unless you are using something like the Burris specific scope, you will have to re-zero with each barrel change - not that the mechanism is faulty (it isn't), just the ballistics change, so it becomes a bit of a faff.

If I had read your original post, I would have noticed it HAD a Burris scope....

You would still need to check each barrel change though, otherwise you stand the risk of inaccuracy!

I would have to advice otherwise! Maybe once Sako were a premier brand, not anymore (in my opinion). I purchased a Sako Quad (.22LR and .22WMR) on the understanding I was purchasing a quality product: I was wrong!

First Quad replaced under warranty, bolt couldn't be inserted, replacement has rusted (after about 4 uses at the range, cleaned after every use) and the importer will not replace, currently in discussion with the dealer about an exchange.

Based on my own experiences I personally wouldn't give any Sako product any room in my safe.

I also found quite a difference in POI between .22LR and .22WMR, you would need a scope which allows for this.

Oh well, more food for thought here guys! I'm going to go back and look the quad over again, it will probably spend most of it's time as a 22 so the barrel switch / optics zero won't be too much of an issue. Decisions decisions...!!

Why look for reason to deny yourself the opportunity to buy another gun?
