Moderating a 94/22

#1 Post by safetyfirst »

So I've got this beautiful little Winchester 94/22, it'd be a perfect hunting rifle but for the lack of a threaded barrel.

The tubular magazine extends to around 3mm below the barrel.

Does anyone have any experience with reducing the length of the magazine tube and threading a 94/22?

I think it'd be a sweet little rifle if it had a mod, without one it's a bit of a safe queen!

I once had a Winchester 94 in .45LC - i just slid the tube out and cut an inch from the breech end. Once back in place that gave an inch of barrel I threaded.

Thanks, good to know I'm not the only one who's contemplated this. I've got a 94AE in .45LC as well but it's strictly a gallery rifle.

I had a 9422 with threaded barrel. But what a pita to load up. Remove mod, load up, fit mod, shoot 10 rabbits, remove mod, load up.......

But of course. I'd not thought about that. Hmm. I'll need a solution. <goes off to think>

Hmm. That brass tube, I wonder if a flexible polymer alternative would do the job... Or a conversion to a captive Spring design.

Perhaps I should just leave it alone.

Vote now.

A: come up with something
B: stop dicking around with a perfectly good rifle.

Shorten the magazine tube, machine a slot on the underside to allow the bullets to be dropped with a slot to the front and use a follower with lever to pull the magazine back. Capacity would be reduced however it would mean you could use the Sound Moderator and load it from the underside.

I'm going to vote for 'don't mess'.

There are 9422s on trader screwcut- personally it puts me off. There are better bunnybashers out there and the 9422 is a peach. Our club has a commemorative 9422 that I use for taking the juniors through LWR with and its just a fab little rifle.

I wonder if there's a QD way to go here with the suppressor. Avoid over alteration of the rifle, though Ovenpaa's suggestion would be logical if mag alteration was the chosen path.
