Er, the clue is in the name.

It's an AR15, but in pistol format (no stock, just the buffer tube)
Means you can have a sub-16" barrel without paying an NFA $200 tax stamp as a short rifle.
Think that's mad - look up what a Sig-brace is!!

As above (but I haven't engaged smug mode ), for some bizarre reason in the US if you remove the stock from a rifle that makes it a pistol under their legislation...

I'd have though an AK format would work better for such a beast. If you had an AK with a foldable stock would it flip flop from pistol to rifle status depending on how it was folded?

It already exists. The Draco AK.

It it has a sub 16" barrel, you could, but you'd be flip-flopping in a Federal prison for quite a long time!
