Section 2 minimum barrel length

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

A section 2 shotgun minimum barrel length is 24" as far as I am concerned however some people not cite the minimum S2 length as 600,0mm and I cannot find this in writing, can anyone confirm the 600,0mm with a reference please?

I'm sure in the legislation it states 24" with no provision of "new money" measurement along side it.
Isn't 600mm = 24" anyway?

I don't think Dave's willing to stake his RFD on 9.6mm!

There is indeed a 9,6mm difference between 600,0mm and 24" - Not a lot however it is enough... I had a good hunt however I could only find references to 24"

I've only seen 24". The April 2016 guide on firearm licensing states:

2.8 When considering the classification of smooth-bore guns, special attention must be paid to the length of the barrel and the overall length. With the exception of those chambered for .22 rimfire cartridges, section 1(2) of the 1988 Act raised to the prohibited category (see Chapter 3) all self-loading and pump-action models which are either short-barrelled (under 24 inches) or short in overall length (under 40 inches). For the purpose of calculating overall length any detachable, retractable or other movable butt-stock should be disregarded. References to ‘shotguns’ in the 1968 Act may be taken generally to mean section 2 shotguns, rather than those subject to sections 1 and 5 of the 1968 Act, unless otherwise stated.

S1(3)(a)(i) Firearms Act 68 says 24". That's primary legislation - needs an Act of Parliament to change it and any guidance otherwise would be irrelevant.

Same with S1, I believe the law states 12"/24" but I've regularly seen it written as 300mm/600mm in other places.
Arming the Country, one gun at a time.

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.

1968 = Imperial measurements

Anyone seeing 300mm/600mm may be quoting EU (continental) firearm rules
