Scope mounting / cant

Any suggestions on how to ensure the scope is mounted so there is no cant to the rifle?
I can line it up by eye so it looks right, but how do I ensure it is spot on?

Use a level.

1. Mount the scope in the rifle, with the rings tightened up enough to hold the scope firmly, yet still allowing you to rotate the scope within the rings.

2. Find a straight line on the floor, such as the edge of a floorboard

3. Stand the (unloaded) rifle muzzle-up, with the toe and heel (top & bottom) of the butt centered along the line on the floor.

4. Look down the scope from the muzzle towards the floor. You'll be looking the wrong way down the scope, but you should be able to see the reticule superimposed over the line on the floor.

5. Rotate the scope in its rings until the reticule lines-up parallel with the line on the floor.

6. Tighten up the scope rings and jobs done.

It takes longer to describe than to do!

Dont worry about it too much !

Having a level mounted scope is only good IF you then hold the rifle level.

Even if your scope is canted ( slightly ) - as long as you are keeping the reticle horizontal / vertical - accuracy will not be affected.

Certainly for target shooting, this is easy as you always have something level downrange as a reference point, be it top of backstop, target etc.

On each range we have a board mounted to the backstop supports that we have measured exactly level to make it simpler for shooters here, level the reticle on the line and its level.

One of the ranges I use has something similar,
it has a black line vertically marked on the edge
of the backstop side wall. Very useful for providing
a plumb line.
