Brian is right. Another anomali with our firearms laws....

As to the original post, Huglu has some 20” sxs’s imported for CAS. A no-frills Turkish gun at about half the price of the Pedersoli. Still, not common though.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

What about the bit of the act that says you can only shorten a shotgun to repair a damaged part ?
I wanted to convert a sec 2 greener to sec 1 but was told it cannot be done due to.....

Subject to this section, it is an offence to shorten the barrel of a shot gun to a length less than 24 inches.

(2)It is not an offence under subsection (1) above for a registered firearms dealer to shorten the barrel of a shot gun for the sole purpose of replacing a defective part of the barrel so as to produce a barrel not less than 24 inches in length
That is my understanding of the situation too. I followed a debate on another forum where someone wanted to convert a .410 shotgun to a .410 shot pistol due to very few shot pistols being available for sale in the U.K. at that time. The suggestion was made that it would be relatively easy for a gunsmith to carry out the conversation but a very experienced and knowledgeable retired firearms manager pointed out that the only exemption in law that permits the shortening of a shotgun barrel below 24" is as a temporary measure by a gunsmith in order to carry out a repair such as sleeving or replacing the barrels.

As silly as it may seem in the U.K. in short (deliberate pun) a short barrelled shotgun has to be originally manufactured as such.

My Firearms team have told me it is acceptable for an RFD to carry out this task on a shotgun incapable of holding more than two cartridges and not being a pump action or semi-automatic shotgun.

Do we have a shrug emoticon?

I would suggest that they are possibly mistaken, it wouldn't be the first time that a firearms department have given out incorrect information and have had to later retract on such advice such is the complexity and confusion of our firearms laws.
The only way to protect yourself in such a case would be to obtain a cast iron assurance in writing from that department that you would not be contravening the firearms act before undertaking such work.

Damn - I wish I knew you when I wanted to do that Greener.

If you have it in writing, I would be tempted to try again ! It was a Greener with 30" barrel - wanted it at 18" for classic slug matches.

Edit - the spirit of the legislation was to prohibit sawn-off shotguns or the conversion to same. When written, there were NO section 1 shotguns - a shotgun was a shotgun. Hence, when shotguns became sec 1 and sec 2 - the original act does not really keep up !

edit part deux - Of course - you can MANUFACTURE a short shotgun. If you as a RFD manufacture a short barrel shotgun from old parts with a replacement barrel ( which can also be a part )......................
