I acquired one of these rifles some years ago. It was so accurate I wanted to try it with a scope so I took it into Norman Clark and he machined the dovetail through to the front of the receiver. I think thta's a better option than mounting the front scope ring on the barrel.

Thanks for all your replies, Gents..........in view of the problem, StandEasy's approach sounds like my best bet. Although it looks a bit of a tired old dog, I think the rifle's worth it.
