A CZ 452 - 453 - 455 will give you good results for a small outlay. If you can find a CZ 452 - new or used - you'll be smiling. The 453 has a set trigger, which is a bonus. The 455's can be great or mediocre, but the good ones are really good.

Most Anschutz rifles will work, too, but their single shot rifles are true target rifles. The magazine fed rifles are good, but the singles take a lot of beating.

Weihrauch HW66 rifles are excellent - well made, very accurate and built to last.

Savage MkII's are good, as is the 93R17 BTVS.

If you are serious about precision target shooting - i.e., sub MOA - then you probably need an Anschutz single shot. Take your pick for 'normal' club-type target shooting.

Don't forget to factor in £300+ for a "reasonable" scope.

Along with what Les has noted, the original Sako finnfire (P94s) takes some beating for a sporting rifle. If you can find a "finnfire range" Then that would be my choice for a repeating action. For single shot, depend what you have to spend, but you'd do well to find either a BSA Martini International (great barrels) or an anschutz match 54 action - 1813/Supermatch.

What kind of target competition are you looking into. Strict Target Rifle will require a single shot rifle and dioptre sights, and as such any sporting rifles as mentioned above will be useless to you... Some target competitions will not allow magazines to be used, or certainly they can be fitted but still need to be single loaded.
