To: ovenpea: By the time Hurricane Irene arrived August 28th it had been downgraded to a Hurricane I / Tropical storm. Lost my electric for 50 some hours but fortunately had water and hot water (tank runs on gas). There was a McDonalds open in my area but they were mobbed. They stayed open for 24/7 and even ran a electric cord extension to the dining area so people could charge their cell phones etc. By September 4th most everyone was back in business.
There is a lesson here. People were not prepared. I at least brought in a supply of fresh batteries, candles and canned (tinned) spaghetti and tuna. I ate it cold. Does not taste that bad but you would not want it for Christmas dinner.

It doesn't take much to show how thin the veneer of civilisation is. I remember when we had power cuts in Lancashire for a week over Christmas. Luckily we have a coal fire and a gas cooker but there were others who were completely beggared. We had queues of neighbours cooking in our oven and people could be seen going from house to house with roasting tins full of turkey! This was fine for a few days but we began to wonder how it would be if it were longer.

Hello. Might as well spill the beans. I just sent you a PM to ask if you could translate into american what a chav is. I don't have a clue.

I would like to thank all of you for the warm welcome. Special thanks to Tower.75 and others for the explanation of what a "chav" is. We have those dopes over here too. I would suppose that America exported them to you in England first. Why would anyone want to wear their pants half-way down their butt? Some sort of mating ritual?

Had a look at Rhode Island on Google Maps. Tickles me to see all the English towns: Warwick, Dartmouth, Tiverton, Portsmouth, Bristol, Newport etc. Looks like a nice place and especially good for fishing!
