Accurising the .22LR round

Adam, I shoot 90-110 year old rifles offhand/unsupported and I try and keep them 100% original so a tuner would not work for me, plus it would probably obscure the front sight. I have been working my way through different rifles and types of ammunition. The rifles I shoot seem to prefer around 1050-1075fps. Next on the list is some SK Flatnose match, I got on OK with the Target so the Match should be OK. Once I have ammunition that shoots well I can start looking at tweaking the bedding screws and maybe loading the barrel slightly.

I had a very enjoyable day today shooting the longrange .22lr match at Bisley - 200 and 300 yards. The conditions were just about as perfect as you can get, clear blue sky and just about zero wind. It would appear the just about the whole of the UK F-Class national squad were there using is a a training day, some really fancy ironmongery on the firing line. - Even then, there wouldn't have been many head shot rabbits at 200 yards. :)

Makes perfect sense

I’m doing a lot of reading on this at the moment. My Ruger Precision loved Edge but since that’s gone I’m trying to work with Team which seems to show the best results at 50y BUT always seems to include a flier, about 1 in 5 ish.
I’ve just sorted three boxes on the scales and kept everything in the 51.10 to 51.15 grain range. The over all range was 51.00 to 51.60 so hardly a massive variance. I’m not expecting to see a huge difference here.

From what I’ve read, the “ogive” (first band on a rimfire round) to top of the rim (not the bottom) has the biggest effect, followed by rim thickness and concentricity. The latter two can be measured with hornady guages I guess, but I might have to knock something up to do the length somehow. There are guages in the states for this (G3 guage) but they’re not easy to come by.

I was given most of a box of cheap subs last year that had been sorted by weight and they shot well, certainly better than I would have expected. This does make me think it is worth gauging/weighing ammunition. Checking by weight and rim thickness would not be too challenging or time consuming if needed.

As an aside, I put 100 rounds of SK Flatnose target through my Model 15 and shot my two highest scores of the year. (50m offhand) I had made some changes though, I moved the point of balance of the rifle back by around 1"/25,00mm and had bored the front aperture out by 0,3mm to 3,5mm plus it was quite a still cool day. Having said that, I shot for groups and to zero off a box to start and it did group well with all shots touching (We have a combined age of around 150 years!)

This makes me wonder if I should invest in 1000 rounds of something slightly up-market. Not Tenex or Midas+ but something in the middle of the range.

Looking at the velocity variation with the Team ammunition, 1047-1100 in just those five rounds, I can't help thinking they would show considerable vertical stringing at longer ranges.

Yep around 0.5” if StrelokPro is to be believed.

I re-shot today, but it was a bit breezy 10mph gusts and unfortunately I didn’t have the chrono

The first team group at 50y (the red targets) was the “cast offs” from my sorting by weight and it shows.
SK Long Range Match seemed to be exceptional at 50y, I know I pulled one shot in that one hole group so it would have been close to 1/2 MOA
But the sorted team seemed better. It also showed very little vertical stringing at 100y even through the groups were larger.

The only issue I have with long range match is that it’s borderline supersonic, so a couple of them cracked.
I also only had 1/2 a box of SK left so I couldn’t test more at 50y

Well we have just had some SK Long Range Match delivered along with a load more SK Flat Nosed Target which worked well for me last week and a couple of thousand Lapua Centre-X so I am looking forward to testing tomorrow, fingers crossed for nice weather. I think the Centre-X is about as far up the middle of the road as I want to go, I very much doubt I would see any benefit from the likes of Tenex and Midas for my type and standard of shooting and even this Lapua might be a bit of an overkill.

A lot of people in the club have switched from Eley to SK Long Range Match, seems like it shoots well in a lot of rifles and is good and consistent

What the hell has happened to Eley? The pinnacle is now just a gamble it seems. But this is right across the range.
