308 - bullet choice

How do you pick a bullet, without going bankrupt?
I'm currently using PPU 168 HPBT match, with ok results, but feel I could get better. When I was using factory ammo, it seemed to work the best, so I figured I'd stick with the same.
However, I feel like I should be getting more out of it. Especially in terms of consistency.
I know the general consensus is to buy better bullets and alrighty then, I'm on board with that.
But better how?
I'm only shooting targets at 100m at the moment.
So how do I pick a bullet and what should I be looking for?
It's been suggested in the range of 155-168, but that's 155/160/162/165/167/168 - so £300 worth of bullets, which I'd rather avoid spending if I could (yes, I'm a tight fisted Yorkie).

At 100m ppu "match" bullets probably suffice.
Top quality at a reasonable price either 155 or 167 Lapua scenars in 1000 boxes.

167 Scenar in 1000 boxes, the 155's are only available as Scenar L's at an increased price (they stopped making the standard 155's).

It's a much more consistent bullet than the PPU "Match" bullet, I found those to be very poor.

The Scenars will easily shoot 1/2" groups all day long.

If you're only shooting at 100m I'd just get whatever you can find cheaply (if such a thing exists now!). I use 168gr Sierra Matchkings in my rifle (as I managed to get a 500 box on a deal a while back) and it cloverleafs at 100m if I do my part

I only shoot .308 for deer and so find 150grn Sierra SPT pretty accurate for what I need. CDSG are doing them for £36.80 per 100 at the moment.

I've used both the 168gr and 155gr privi match bullets with good results. They are basically clones of the equivalent Sierra match Kings. I had a couple of 49s at 900 and one at 600 last year. All dropped shots down to me. I've used the 155gr bullets at a thousand yards several times, always in challenging winds and whilst my scores were nothing to write home about I'm confident it is the nut behind the trigger and not the bullets. Sight settings were the same as for the smk.

I recently weighed individually 100 PPU 168 match - difference between the lightest and heaviest was 0.5gr. Repeating the exercise with 200 Lapua 167 Scenars difference was 0.4gr.
