I have just bought this bayonet its for the Enfield 1853 muzzle loading musket . Now is all I need is the rifle to go with it . Its not in the top quality bracket but its all there and the scabbard looks in good condition for its age . It could do with a good clean up but how far do you go with these things

Very nice indeed!
It looks to be in very condition as it is and I would not clean it at all Dave, a light oiling would be as far as I would go.

Great 1853 Bayonet! If it were mine I would use oil and 0000 steel wool on the bayonet which would get the rust speckles off. On the scabbard leather I would use a semi-rough cloth and Pecard's leather dressing. Most of us here in Yank-land clean up the rust ( it's like cancer for guns ) when we buy a new firearm or bayonet.

Like it. Most people buy the rifle first

Are you looking to get an original or a repro?

Primarily Iam bayonet collecting again after selling my collection many years ago and regretting it , but at the time I needed the money . But I have also now been trying to reduce the number of .22s I have , so Iam thinking of getting into other forms of shooting .

I gave the bayonet a good clean today got all the dry looking crud off of it and gave it a good wipe down with oil . I found some numbers stamped on the muzzle ring , I also gave the scabbard a wipe down with some dubbing and found some numbers stamped on it , a bit to faint to tell exactly what they are .

Came across this on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NIz_622iTU

Try taking some macro pictures of the numbers, load them onto your computer, crop the bit you want and enlarge. You might see them better.
