I have for the past week or so been preparing to make some crab apple jelly. Muslin, jar, sugar, just needed the apples and I knew where they were so I took the dogs there today to pick some.
Brought them home and Ovenpaa said, "hm they do not look like crab apples". I replied "well last year when I tasted one it was really bitter".
Just had one and it is ever so sweet. I reckon the one I ate was early in the season!
Any idea what they are?

Re: Crab apples - not
Crab apples are usually yellow and the trees tend to be "on their own"
What you night have there are domestic apple trees that have escaped and become wild ... or ornamental apples that can fruit profusely but with small fruit.

But have a look at ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Winte ... hCrab2.jpg

Well done that man
It sounds exactly like the tree/fruit in question.

Red fleshed fruit, excellent for red applesauce, jelly and coloring cider and fresh eating for those who like tart fruit. Abundant purple flowers, bronze red leaves, ripens early to mid October, hardy to –50F.

That is the one. Definitely.
I have just picked a bag full, now I need to figure out what to do with it.
I could still make jelly...
Thank you Polchraine!
