If it's range you're after, maybe one of those rifles outside the front door of the Imperial War Museum?

All the "Varmint" rifles that I know of have a heavier barrel than normal spec, this is good for accuracy but should you be planning on taking it on foot you may find it is too much.

Is the .223 also for vermin /game or for shooting targets?

I would look at the Tikka T3, excellent straight out of the box

I got my son a Howa 1500 in .308 with the 20" heavy varmint barrel (as there were no 24"), dropped it into an Axiom stock and was pleasantly surprised at how accurate it was out of the box and not too heavy.

Given that a standard barrel Howa is just over £500 or the Weatherby Vanguard Mk2 (same rifle) is only £450 I was very impressed and am now looking at another in .223 for me to play with :good:

I have a Steyr SSG-04 in .308 which is excellent and had looked at a s/h Steyr .223 Scout but at £400 more than a new Howa/Weatherby it's not a hard choice to make!.

Like the others have said, you need to tell us what its use will be, then we can all still give the same answers tongueout also what do you class as "long range?"

This 16 inch naval rifle has a decent range, though it won't leave much of Bugsy ...
