NM MILSURPS July Shoot

#1 Post by 1886lebel »

NM MILSURPS (New Mexico Military Surplus Rifle Pistol Shooters) July Shoot will be taking place on July 22, 2012 at the Albuquerque Shooting Range Park and will be a challenging course of fire.
The course of fire will consist of shooting at 200, 300, 400 and 500 meter ranges with 5 rounds each at those ranges (20 rounds total) with NO SIGHTERS at steel targets.
We normally go through two complete rounds of the course of fire at our shoots so plan your ammunition accordinally to do this twice.
The basic rule for this shoot is that the weapon MUST be an original configured military weapon, that means no aftermarket sights, target sights, the sights must have been the same exact sights used by the military of those weapons. Scoped rifles may be reproduction types but MUST have the period type scope on them for them to be used in the shoots ... We do seperate the classes of weapons to compete in ... bolt action weapons, semi-auto weapon and sniper rifles.
If you would like more information on the shoot you can PM or email me for more information as to the times and where we hold the shoot at the ASRP.

RANGE REPORT:
We all gathered at 0830 at the range, loaded up the targets, set them up at the various ranges and then went down to the range building to sign in and pay for the day shooting fee $6.00 unless you have annual pass like I do :)

We then gathered at 200 meter shooting pad to get our range rules, business meeeting and draw lots for groups to see where they would start thier field of fire, there were 12 shooters so we broke in groups of 3 each.
I was paired with Steve and Jorg who were shooting the following weapons: Steve a U.S. Magazine Rifle, Caliber .30, Model 1903A3 in 30-06, Jorg a Swedish Gevär m-1896 in 6,5x55 mm and myself a Trekhlineinaya Vintovka obr.1891g in 7,62x54R mm.
We started at the 200 then moved to the 500, 385 then last stage of 300 meters ... I had a 12 out of 20 score- (at 200 I scored a 5 out of 5, 300 3 out of 5, 385 3 out of 5, and 1 out of 5). After everyone shot at all the stages we meet back up and gave our scores to the scorer.
We then took a break to enjoy some elk and cheese snacks one of the members had brought :) ... during this break the targets were re-painted and drew lots again to see who paired up with who, Steve and myself were paired up again at the 200 for the second round.
We did have some members who had to take off but still had enough for every range pad to have two shooters each. This round I did better with a score of 14 out of 20 (at 200 I scored a 5 out of 5, 300 3 out of 5, 385 3 out of 5, and 3 out of 5). After everyone shot we then once again tallied up our scores.

In the Bolt-Action Open Sight Division, 1st Place went to Rob using a Schmidt-Rubin Infanteriegewehr Modell 1896 in 7,5x55 mm (38), 2nd Place to myself (26) and Third Place to Dave using a Chinese Type 53 Carbine in 7,62x54R mm (23)
In the Semi-Automatic Open Sight Division, 1st Place went to Patrick G using a Austrian Sturmgewehr 58 (StG 58) in 7,62×51mm NATO (37), 2nd Place to Ron using a Ruchnoy Pulemyot Kalashnikova (RPK) in 7,62x39 mm (30) and Third Place to Debbi using a U.S. Carbine M4 in 5,56x45 mm (27)
In the Bolt-Action Sniper Division, 1st Place went to Ted with a perfect Score of 40 shooting a Swedish Prickskyttegevär m-1941(B) in 6,5x55 mm.
Everyone shot very well that was there :) ... Everyone agreed that we need to do this shoot again down the road. Our next shoot in August will be a 'Moving Man' running from 300 to 385 and 500 meter Shoot in which you will engage the target as it moving and then a stationary target at 500 meters :)

I forgot my camera at the house, so sorry no pictures
The targets are steel that varied in sizes, do not quote me on the dimensions they were ... the 200 and 300 meters ones are approximately about 30 inch circles and the 385 and 500 meter ones are 45 (L) by 30 (W) oblounge. These were old steel manhole covers that went on Jet Fuel Storage Tanks which myself and another member, who was my supervisor in the military had aquired when they tore the old tanks down last year right before we both retired and replaced them with brand new state of the art ones :)

We do have a challenge here on our range ... the wind at 500 and 200 meters as well where you shoot from can be different at the same exact time. For instance we had a 20 mph wind at 200 going right to left at 500 meters it was going 10 mph left to right and at the shooting pads it was going right to left at 5 to 10 mph. It can constantly change throughout the day and even minute by minute.
The range may look flat but there a quite a few dips and gulleys that are laid into the land as it rises which you can see at the 500 meter pad looking towards the General Public Range which is east about a mile away of this range, you can actually look down into it.

Plates are good because you know immediately how your shot went, do you have any flags up to show the wind or is it purely down to the surrounding environment indicators such as grass and trees.

There are range flags at each of the ranges ... what is grass, is that the green stuff
We actually can judge the speed of the wind in the spotter scopes by the mirage it leaves in it :good:
You can actually call the shot before you hear the sound of it hitting the plate, at both the 385 and 500 meters you can actually see the flight of the bullet going down range through the spotting scope.
