7.62 - depends on your cert and your garden. If you are in the correct circumstances it could be perfectly legal!

Mr Logic if I lived next door to you and seen you walking about in your back garden with a gun I would phone the police and advise them of the fact that there is a guy walking about in his back garden with a gun that could be loaded and how do I know he is not some nut case that is about to start shooting people with it.

I'll put money on 90% of the forum now being glad they don't live next door to you, if that's the sort of thing you like to get up to.

Every now and again I'll get my air rifle out and have a plink in the back garden. One neighbour stuck her head out of the window and began screeching away "that's illegal!" She really didn't like it when I stayed calm and said "no it's not - if you like I'll phone the police and they'll confirm that for me. Problem?"

edit - this being the newbie forum, I'll point out I was shooting with a depressed line of sight at a solid backstop (half a dozen bricks arranged into a U shape) and no pellets left my property. If your plinking in your garden means any shots could leave the boundaries of your property, stop immediately!

With views like that I take it you are an anti, coming on here just to stir up trouble?

I don't go in the garden very often these days with a gun but I did used to practise with the shotgun, for swinging onto birds etc (no, I didn't used to fire it). Perfectly legal so I am not about to let anyone stop me.

Got rid of the odd .22 misfire into the lawn, too. Open ticket on my own land so no legal issue there!

To be fair, I wouldn't want to see someone strutting about next door's garden with even an air rifle; FAC or no FAC. Lawful or not, it's irresponsible and, ultimately, puts the sport in jeopardy.

With 'rights' comes responsibility, no?

For air rifles etc isn't there a 'within 50' of a public highway' rule?

If they're not pointing it at you/people and aren't firing it in an irresponsible way, what is the issue?

Its 50ft from the centre of the highway AND causing disturbance to the highway users, it isn't an automatic offence just on the distance from the highway

this sort of attitude will be the end of shooting in this country , the antis just need to sit back and let infighting destroy us (just cast your mind back to the nra's stance after hungerford and dunblane) ..............
