thats a great article thanks dromia still abit nervous about trying it out , is the process in my case to find out how long the boolit can be so it will chamber succesfully without having to be seated ridiculously far into the case ?

That is part of it but the main reason is to get good acuracy with cast boolits then you must have good boolit fit. Generally fit is related to bore and groove size and the starting point is usually stated at 2 thou over groove diameter.

How ever in most rifles throat fit is more important the groove because if the boolit is deformed as it travels through the throat then the damage to accuracy is done before it reaches the grooves.

In short throated rifles like the Swiss, and the K31 is even worse than the 1911 then the driving area of the boolit will be inside the case as there is no or little room for it in the throat so to get your boolit heavy enough or, as you say not have it taking up too much case capacity, then you need a bore riding design that will slip in to the bore upon chambering.

I think bore riders are the most difficult boolits to use as they have to have a driving area diameter to fit the groove/chamber dimensions plus a bore riding diameter that exactly fits the bore. If it doesn't then that long bore riding section of the boolit is in danger of deforming and slumping upon ignition.

Therefore suitably dimensioned bore riding moulds are more difficult to source and when you do find one they usually need to be sized to two different diameters, unless you are really lucky.

The RCBS 308-165-Sil is regarded as the most succesfull off the shelf mould for the K31 and the other Swiss rifles. Depending on your 1911 throat dimensions other moulds might be sutable with bumping.

Also make sure you don't use too hard an alloy.

When you know what you've got then you will know what to ask for, until then you are spending your money on pot luck.

thanks dromia i get now the purpose of impact casting , i have spoken to dodgyrog and hes gonna see if he can recommend somthing for me . so if i dont have to do the cast that would be good as i am a coward and think im gonna bugger it up :lol:

If you get it wrong then try again, your only going to damage a case or two at most.

Bolts and chambers are designed to take far more pressure than you will ever generate with a hammer.
