thanks for the suggestions and pointers guys, but i think i'll struggle to find sub £100 nikon optics.
the chinese acog is out, think i'd be too busy worrying if it was holding its zero for me to have any faith in it.

I appreciate the need to save money, but you are asking for the extremely unlikely. Sub £100 scopes are, as a general rule, crap. Their optics are poor and their adjustments worse. Tbh, the optics are sometimes bearable, but I have yet to encounter such a cheap scope which has reliable and repeatable adjustments.
Therefore I think you should either accept that your < £100 scope is likely to be bad, or buy a better one which costs more money. You certainly can get a Bushnell to do the job for £200.

point taken, i know you get what you pay for, i was just hoping (its nice to dream isn't it?) that around 100 sheets would get something fairly decent, especially for a rimfire at short ranges.
anyways, some hunting around (no pun intended) has tuffed up a Nikko Stirling gold crown, new but old stock. worth a punt?

On a 22LR should work to the expected level. I.e. not great but once it's zeroed leave alone and it should be OK.

Just to update this thread, in the end I went for something sub £100.
I know thats not going to please the leupold and S&B fans, but there ya go.
I got a 3-9x32 bugbuster from UGS, bought it off ebay for £60 from a guy going by 'warrior hunters'.
Its a cracking little scope, compact, short eye relief, mil dot and IR. I recommend it to anyone needing optics for their plinker.

Jazz;
Glad you managed to get yourself sorted out scope-wise. A bit late I know but I'd also toss my hat into the ring in support of Nikon glass if you are looking to upgrade your optics in the future.
