The one I shot was an AI with huge T8 style moderator. shooting at Kingsbury Ranges at 600 yds.

I use Mods on my .308's. Find it easier on me, my ears and my shoulder (thats cos without I keep getting punched, especially with my PH 'Scout' with the break on!!)

I love my .338 and wouldn,t part with it for anything. I built it myself, on a surgeon xl action, and its a heavy gun. Its braked, and can be shot all day comfortably, its also stupidly accurate at long range. Its great fun watching others dial in minutes of wind, and not having to put any on yourself. A 300 grain bullet at 2750 doesn,t get blown about much !

The chairman of our club has an HS Precision .300 Remington Ultra Mag! The muzzle flash even on a sunny day is something!

I spent a nervous 20 minutes down the butts once as someone launched a missile attack from the far end of the range, he said it was a 300RUM but I was not convinced. They come in like supersonic sledgehammers..

It still amuses me that when either in the butts or manning the flags that I hear the crack of the supersonic bullet before the bang of the muzzle...don't know why (it should amuse me). The echo of that crack in the butts is very strange...poor choice of words maybe. :lol: :lol:

Amuses me even more when in some war films and cowboys they duck to miss the bullet they hear being fired at them.

This is the problem with the Vikings rifle, it goes off with such a crack that 1000m down the other end you have no idea where it is coming from.

Biggest shock for me in the butts was a BP shooter at 200 yards with something large, first shot took a fist sized lump out of the right hand frame upright and had everyone scattering, second shop finished the job and saw me asking what the flip he was shooting with over the radio whilst the butt crew either cowered of laughed depending on how far away they were.

It was one of those spur of the moment buys for him as he was actually looking for a .300 win mag. My LGS which my mate runs and I do a little "part-time" there, took it in as part-ex against a brand new Blaser LSR2. He really didn't want to take it as something so specialist may sit on the shelf for months, if not years. He offered it to me for what he gave, which was way less than half price of a new HS and this thing had fired less than 50 rounds! I didn't have the cash though, or it would be in my cabinet.......

A quick call to the chairman had him put a deposit on it over the phone and he picked it up a couple of days later! One day I hope to have first refusal on it.

The HS stock is outstanding. It has a recoil reducer in it and a propriatory muzzle brake. Shooting 165gn bullets at over 3300fps is like shooting a standard .308......... put with cases at 120 quid a hundred and over 100 grains of powder per cartridge, it's in the same price bracket as a .308!!

But boy, is it worth it!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

From what I hear the 300RUM can eat barrels when running quick loads and I cannot get over the 100 grains of powder bit, that is just over 150 loads/kg or over 40p/shot just for powder.

Ah well, what price fun eh?

Shame we can't own semi-auto .50cals anymore, take some of the bite off them. This has just replaced a Barratt M82 on my wishlist;

Dave did one for me as well..... I was amazed at the lack of recoil compared to what I had expected and the accuracy on my first 1000yard shoot last year was amazing...... totally 'ticked-off' a soldier shooting a Barrett Bravo who was sharing a target with me! You just have to LOVE Daves (Sorry 'Baldies!) work!
