This is not a new policy the hand loaded ammunition thing has been in force for ages.

That's exactly the risk Chuck. They don't tend to call them grass fires any more, they tend to refer to them as wildfires so as to better indicate the amount of damage both short and long term that this type of fire causes.

What does this mean?

When it burns out fence lines and trees that were planted some years ago it is damage and costly to replace, but I agree that in some instances a quick burn off can be beneficial. However many longer open ranges are built on moorland and if the fire gets down into the peat level below it can take months to extinguish and involve a tremendous amount of manpower and equipment. The range could then be out of use for months on end because no one can shoot when people are working in the danger area.

I neglected to also mention the damage to wildlife that wildfires also cause especially ground nesting birds, some of which are quite rare and benefit from the protection offered by danger areas where the public do not normally have the right to roam.

So you can't use them on field fire ranges either?! Feel sorry for anyone that has a load of tracer eating up their ammo limit, how can they get rid of it apart from pulling all the bullets so their no longer part of their ammo limit??

The JSP 403 rule prior to these changes stated:

"Civilian clubs are not permitted...... to fire tracer on any range other than a FFA."

So yes, it's now a total ban.
