South Yorks have been sending out similar letters, apparently the firearms dept. are being audited and checks are being made with license holders to confirm they are keeping proper records.

Who are keeping records: the owners or Mr Plod? The owner doesn't need to keep a record...

They are checking Mr Plods records to see if they match what licence holders actually have.

Slightly off topic but this thread made me wonder.
Today my wife and I received letters from the NHS asking us to confirm our Name, Address, GP practise and more ... details that they already have! Does this suggest that the NHS has had a major data failure?
Or is there a major failure at a government data centre that has affected different areas of the country and different operations?

Having now seen a copy of the North Yorks letter, they're rather vague about this audit - although recipients are invited to ring the FLD and ask questions about what's going on.
Of course, the term "audit" can cover a multitude of database-related sins.

Well, I was beaten to it, but I'll certainly be following this up on El Reg!

A police force has had to write to thousands of firearms licence holders after admitting they are unsure where they are living and what guns they own.
It has been revealed that a member of staff from South Yorkshire Police's firearms licensing team had been wrongly recording details or not recording them at all.
Following the bungle South Yorkshire Police have been forced to write to 9,000 licence holders for them to confirm their details, and double check they have the correct records on file.

I'd be interested to find out just how national the National Firearms Licencing Management System really is - i.e. local servers with local details, local servers with all details, national servers with all details etc
