Hmmm, given modern LPG fired high pressure flash boilers that heat up in mere minutes and produce no ash that requires extensive cleaning out, might a return to steam, perhaps steam turbines driving a generator and thence multiple distributed axles, be a realistic possibility ?

Great pics, reminds me of my granddad who was a railway inspector. Had a few trips up front as a kid..magic! Bring them back!

I used to commute past Southall Railway Centre every morning and evening. Always used to see running steam engines going in or out of there. Convinced them to let me come and poke around (the joys of being a journo!) but never did get to take them up on it in the end.

remember as a kid trainspotting at a local marshalling yard, and being allowed to climb up into the cab when they were shunnting, and shovelling coal and pulling the old wistle, loved those old castle class, and coffee pots
