Are you going to go with F/TR or F Open?
Re: Another new comer
I would like to try my hand at F/TR. However I don't really have a suitable rifle for at present as my AI only has a 24" barrel, and I think I'll struggle keeping the rounds supersonic 1000yds.ovenpaa wrote:Are you going to go with F/TR or F Open?

Re: Another new comer
Is this an AI/AE with a 24" barrel? If so I shoot one and it will comfortably work with 155 Scenar's at 1000 and is fairly happy at 1200. I had best results with 170 Lapua Lockbase but they are awkward to find these days.Rascal wrote:I would like to try my hand at F/TR. Yes it is a MK 1 AE and is very accurate at 600yds even with DAG & MEM milsurp. I thought it would struggle to get a MV of 2950 - 3050fps which is what I estimate I would need with 155's to stay supersonic in most conditions at 1000yds without pressure problems...
I would be interested in you load data and speeds you are getting. If I can make it work out to 1000yds I may get to shoot a couple rounds in the GB F-class F/TR this year
Re: Another new comer
3050fps with 155's out of a 24" barrel is going to be scary. Personally I work at a bit over 2900fps, I use moly coated 155's with 47.5 grains of N540 built to five thou off the lands with Fed210M primers and Lapua brass. with a 104m zero for 1000 yards at 10C I need 9.1 Mils (31.3MOA) elevation. This gives me around 1265fps at the target. Please do not take my data as given for your rifle though, I have put a few thousand rounds through my AI from new and know it very well.
Stick a longer barrel and a proper bipod on an AW and you have a very good F/TR rifle.
I have always thought the Lapua 170 Lockbase was better suited to the rifle and you can hit them quite hard as well but supply is difficult and I used to get very occasional vertical fliers and could never figure out why (maybe 1:15)
The 170 is used in the Lapua HPS and I have the approximate load data from Lapua them selves if you need it. Oddly Lapua do not use Viht powders in factory ammunition, instead they use Bofors which we cannot readily purchase.
Yes I know 47.5/N540 is quite hot but with a 24" barrel needs must.
On the subject of Milsurp I found the DAG (RUAG) good but the prices went far too high, I never pushed it beyond 800 but my son has used it at 1000/1200 on warm days. AMA which is Danish works incredibly well and returns sub MOA groups at 600m and if you can ever find it the South African R1M1 stuff in the 140 round battler packs is very good.

Re: Another new comer
Hi Andy and welcome
I was also on the F class training weekend and have to aggree it was excellent, I will be shooting the F-TR league this year starting in April at Diggle
Your 24 inch barrel woud definitely struggle at 1000, my old 26 inch Remmy PSS was pushing hard, so I had it rebarreled with a 32" 1/10twist Trueflie

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools!!

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Hi 20series, I remember you from the training weekend as we were both in the same group...

Welcome deerhunter. Are there many deer in Scarborough?
We have some at Bisley, the army put them in for us. Actually it was Surrey wildlife. But army sounds better.
