Cosford , museum or the air show . Both worth it , but travel early for the air show , especially if the weather looking good .

Just about anywhere listed here:-

You can choose from regional or national locations. I've been to several heretofore unknown places and they were all well worth the effort. ;)

I hate half term! Because of work commitments I am frequently the only family member available to look after the grandchidren... Boy 11... Girl 7

And so it was yesterday. I decided to take them to Moors Valley near Bournemouth.

http://www.moors-valley.co.uk/

Lots for Kids to do and other than car parking charges and a fee for having a ride on the miniature steam engine it is free. You can if you wish hire bikes (can take your own) you can also hire Segways .The site covers a large forested area with trails and interesting obstacles to clamber over. large play park area. They also have a large lakeside picnic area. (we took a picnic) We arrived at 0945hr and left at 1515hr all exhausted.

Highly recommended. It really helps if the sun is shinning.

First off I thought this looked like a very useful site (and so it might be) but when I entered my post code it only came up with two attractions. both approximately forty miles away! I'm sure there must be many more much closer.

Haddon Hall - near to Chatsworth but much more intimate and a treat if you like the Tudor.

100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum.
Spent a day there over the weekend and very interesting it is. They have restored the control tower and some nissen huts that house the exhibits. There are hundreds of photos and mementos from the war when the base was home to 4 US squadrons of B17,s and covered 3 or 4 village parish boundaries.

As an added bonus the Chelmsford Motor Club had its East Anglian Classic Historic rally at the airfield http://chelmsfordmc.co.uk/EAC
Plenty of Mexico's, Coopers, Mg's, RS2000's, 911's etc all rally prepped and doing what they do best.

York is nice. Plenty to do and see and not that expensive. Lovely places fairly nearby. Whitby.
