.22 wmr is harder hitting than a .17......and you can get semi auto to.....not sure about the legalities but I've seen one for sale here and there....

Interesting conclusion from an article by Chuck Hawks:

"Used with proper ammunition, the .17 HMR has an advantage in velocity, trajectory, and accuracy. The .22 WMR has an advantage in energy, bullet frontal area, sectional density, and consequently killing power.

After researching and writing this article, I have reached a conclusion about these two cartridges. I would favour the .22 WMR for shooting small game and varmints within 100 yards, and the .17 HMR if shots often run much beyond that distance."

For centrefire 22 Hornet is another option or maybe the 17 Hornet at sensible distances.

As your FAC says 22rf then the WMR is an option.

Oddly enough, we'd recommend the opposite. The 22WMR retains plenty of oomph at 100 + mards so if you can judge range and thus holdover well, it's the better long range option...

the running man. Hang on a minute here mate, I didn't say that I hunt with a 17HMR, what I said was that there are people who do. My point was that the 17HMR will easily take down a fox was all. Like you I am very fussy about what I use to hunt and when I do hunt, well put it this way, when I shoot an animal it is done in such a way and with a calibre so as to cause as little suffering as possible to the animal if indeed any at all. In fact when I have to hunt coyotes which are similar in size to fox I usually use my AR15 or my 22-250.

BTW, the video of the guy with the 17HMR taking down the sow and her piglets, every one of those kills was a clean kill at about 50 - 70 yards. Also just because .270 is the minimum calibre over there, doesn't mean that the use of a lesser calibre is immoral. A .25 calibre round will kill a pig or a deer just as efficiently as .270 or a .308 round.

You can also get a semi auto in 17HMR, but yeah I agree the .22WMR is a harder hitting round.
