On the induction night, the club will normally take you through the range procedures and safety rules. Make sure you understand everything that has been said. Nobody will think you're a numpty if you ask questions - it's more likely to be the opposite. If you need to make notes, then make notes.
Our club has roughly a 1 to 1.5 hour theory session covering the basics of safe weapons handling, range etiquette and range drills. At the end of the theory session, new members are taken to the range where they normally shoot 50 rounds (.22lr). If they survive that without killing themselves or another club member, they will be encouraged to come back.
