Just skim read the guidance and it says this in the Club section;

18.3. Members of a rifle club, miniature rifle club or muzzle-loading pistol club approved by the Secretary of State or the Scottish Ministers may, without holding firearm certificates, have in their possession firearms and ammunition when engaged as members of the club in, or in connection with, target shooting (section 15(1) of the 1988 Act as amended by section 45 of the 1997 Act). It should be noted that section 15(1) does not stipulate that the firearms must be club firearms. A member of an approved club may temporarily possess
a firearm for use solely on the club’s range, or other ranges which it may use. However, a person cannot possess a firearm under this exemption if it is a class of firearm for which the club is not approved. It should also be noted that section 15(1) of the 1988 Act, as amended, does not apply to the use of long barrelled pistols or section 1 shotguns used for target shooting, as it only allows possession of a rifle. Accordingly, club approval cannot be extended to cover the use of these firearms.

Far be it from me to challenge the Home Office but I think they're manipulating the wording of the Act to suit their own interpretation.

Section 13 is about "Equipment for ships and aircraft".

Are they (LBR/LBP) defined in the firearms act?

I have a 'carbine', can I shoot that at my 'rifle' club?

ETA: You are referring to the guidance, that is not the Firearms Act that I was referring to, nor is it the law.

I know there has been some legal rangling over this issue that has been covered in other threads so I'll leave this here but to say I think the HO is over stepping the mark and need to be challenged.

To return to the original subject a LBP will provide lots of plinking fun and a different challenge from the usual rifle & scope combo.

A 10/22 will offer plenty of great fun days and give you loads of change from £500, even from new.

If you want something you can endlessly modify/upgrade/fit different stocks to its got to be a 10/22.

If you want an AR then M&P 15/22.

For something smaller/SMG size then the Walther MP5 A4 is a good option

STG-44 is pretty fun. You really couldn't have asked a more open-ended question unless it was about lengths of string ;-)

Walther Uzi always gets a few looks at the range - pretty cr@p accuracy but fun for the reactive tin can set-up I have :-) , you'll get two for your £1000!

Ruger 10/22 - always a good choice and you can change stocks, add bits etc. whenever the mood takes you...think mine's on stock number 4 or 5....
