Nowadays, it's pretty unusual, as well, even to find a new gun chambered in 2 3/4. Everything is pretty much 3 now, with some masochists moving to the 3 1/2. No harm in using 2 1/2 in a 2 3/4 - no different than using a 2 3/4 in a 3.meles meles wrote:And when, approximately, did 2 &3/4 inch shells start to supersede the 2 &1/2 inch variety ? Can any harm be done in shooting the smaller type in a gun chambered for the larger ? (We wouldn't do it the other way around of course...)

Re: There are bores other than 12 ?
I've got a 20b that I've had since I was 9 years old. It's a great gun, ejectors broken, but shoots straight and was more than enough gun to learn to shoot on.
As soon as the ejector is fixed, it'll be back out and used and I'll report how I get on with it.
Great for the lighter recoil, over a 12b, and as said above, very pointable.

I shot a 4 bore big game rifle once - winged solid ball.
I shot into a dead elm tree over 3 feet in diameter and the ball went into the really hard dried out wood over 15". The recoil was 'interesting' to say the least!
