Would it be correct to assume that this operates like a single-barrel break-open shotgun? I assume that the weapon breaks to reveal a plugged breach with primer nipple. Presumably the weapon is loaded via the muzzle as with the majority of black powder guns.

Is the barrel rifled?

Your assumption is correct - it uses shotgun primers. It is Section 1.
