In all seriousness, this was the situation that I found myself in a few years ago. After much beard scratching and thinking, I went for a 26" barrelled Remmy 700 VSSF in .308. With the right load, I can get a Sierra 2156 up to 2886fps and can shoot 1000 yards. Hitting the target at that range is up to me, but it can be done. The rifle was 800 quid from Mike357 of this parish.

There are other options, but longer barrels are your friend. Shorter may work, but you'll have to go hotter to reach that far. I would personally not be tempted to by a one rifle for everything. Stalking rifles are light and short, target rifles are long and heavy. I'd not want to go stalking with mine, even though it's light compared to some I have seen.

In my opinion for a 'reasonable' (and what is deemed reasonable is up to you), if it has to be .308 then probably a Remington 700 SPS or Tikka T3, everyone will have their own preference?

If you want something else then as mentioned a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmore (which has a 24" barrel), whereas the .308 is only 20". Here my Ruger PR in 6.5CM:

Divorce threshold is probably £1500 I reckon, but once she's left me I'd probably have more to spend in the long run.

.308 is what I have the slot for - so thats the way I'm heading.

RPR set my mate back £2K+ with scope and extras, so I need to be under that really.
But if something changes I'll happy get accuracy International on the phone.

So I shoot at Bisley, mostly at 100-600, on the odd occasion we go out to 1000.

I have shot a Rem Super Sniper in .308 at that range and it seemed to make it no problem.

So scope off the table at the mo as thats a whole second story, and I can hide that from the "accountant" if you get my drift.

So .308 - £1-1.5k all in capable of 1000 on occasion, where do I put my ££££
Ruger seems the obvious choice, but thats been done.

A Howa . . . no brainer really.

eg 308 barrelled action, varmint, 24" barrel in a GRS Berserk stock. Dauntsey are doing a package including scope and moderatore for 1300. Or you could easily put together the basic rifle for under a grand - barrelled action for 600 and GRS stock for 350 from Spud. Then one of the scopes from Fox Firearms and you're good to go.

Club had the cheapo Howa and I hated it, I was better with a parker Hale that had the stock cut down.
I'm blaming the Howa, but I know its more than likely the stock and scope that were poor.

Howa HCR looks an interesting prospect.

Parker Hale 1200 TX - usually sell around £120 - £300

More than enough gun for the distance & way more for the money than some of the plastic crowd pleasers.

That's a shame, I love mine and when I got the ammo right it'll shoot to below 0.5MOA . . .

And that was with the original bendy Hogue stock. Mine's now in a Boyds thumbhole and I think it's a cracker.

Talk to Roger at SYSS (Rimfire Magic), get yourself one of his tweeked Remington 700's with a 26 inch barrel in the stock of your choice, more than adequate for club use.

Mine used to shoot excellent out to 800 with home loaded 175gn SMK's and was capable out to 1000.
