I just did a search and read up a bit. I could machine a block for a front rest fairly easily just need to find a front rest at the right price. I actually have a suitable scope and a .22 rifle that would do the job (may be) if i can modify it to accept a scope or I could use my CZ 452 for starters I guess.

The NSRA rules are IMHO rubbish and rear rests are not permitted.
The best are those for UKBR22 (based on International rules) - but can be very costly. My front rest cost nearly £400 second hand and rear bags ain't cheap either.
The more competitive you get, the more it costs.

If I can get a Caldwell bench rest jobby for a reasonable price to see how they work Im thinking I could make one.

Making front rests is entirely feasible. Unless you want to adopt the ‘clamp it in a vice and spend three grand’ approach that is...

I made some for our club that were square section steel tube frame filled with lead for the base and an aluminium platform and column for the support. Stable, solid, adjustable, repeatable and almost free.

A interesting read thanks. This 22 bench rest is really starting to grip me I feel another hefty spend coming on. I have some white nylon block that would make a nice front block and it machines a treat.

Alpha - that's all you really need - a block of something heavy with a recess in it for the stock fore-end. Rules say the fore-end mustn't be a close fit - like a proper benchrest set-up. Vertical adjustment can all be done with the 'floating' butt.

I got a front rest. I have been on the relevant websites/forums. Down loaded targets etc. Getting ready to give it a go. I need to clear up more slots every time I add something off the bucket list something else crops up.
