Optics recommendation please.

I think a lot of vortex is built in the far east, but their marketing activity is very good / prolific.

I have 2 vortex's, Gen2 PST3-15 on a 308 (which I've not actually used yet but the quality seems very good). Whilst on my 556 Lantac AR, I have the strike eagle 1-8 which has proved good, easy to use and quick to pick up targets it will be fine on a rimfire. Advice on scopes is always spend as much as you can, so I've just spent more on the 3-15 than i thought I ever would but in the long run it will pay off. Ultimately the style / options for shooting in the UK probably don't test products to their max durability so there's probably room to spend a bit less. However, been very happy with my vortexs.

You're right about their marketing!

The Vortex scopes (as opposed to the red-dots) seem to be excellent, I haven't heard of a single one going wrong and the ones I've looked through appeared to be lovely glass Sometimes a bit heavy (the original Strike Eagle) but for the money really good value.

Yes the glass is very good, obviously there is a difference between S&B etc but I think the features for the money and the quality are good. You've got to hand it to them, they seem much more visible with their marketing than many other brands who rely on their reputation. It's good to see these challenger brands coming in and attacking different parts of the market. As much as I'd like an S&B or Zeiss or Leupold, it's not viable to spend that sort of money on something that is essentially a hobby. Hopefully one day it might but you've got to work with what you have :)

I'd agree, a little heavy, certainly noticed the difference when mounted it to my rifle but I'm not carrying them mile after mile so I can cope with it for the short periods I'm actually holding them up.

Slightly off topic, I held a AI .338 topped with S&B glass the other week, essentially set up the same as the military variant, wow was it heavy and those guys do have to carry it!!

So this thread, and also the acquisition of a Lantac imminent, I started down this path and there seems to be a lot of contenders around sub £500 for scopes of 1-4x or 1-6x...

The first one that pops to mind is obviously the Vortex Strike Eagle, but that seems to be one of the older models now, with new models of similar style scopes hitting the market - I wonder if anyone has tried any.

Certainly no lack of choice (and I realise this is just from optics warehouse - and there are many more options - I've had many good dealings with them so will continue to use them for optics).... but where do you make up the choice.

In weight? Reticle? FFP Is tempting if the right reticle so you can judge those drops, but in practical do you really concentrate that hard on drops when you're going for speed on an IPSC Target - even out to 100, if you aim at the top would a .22lr not still hit the alpha?

At this point I'm stumped.

Though that C-More does look good, 1-10x in such a small factor, that half-mil-dot reticle looks awfully busy though.

Need somewhere to go and put my eye through some of these methinks...

The Strike Eagle is good, I used mine on CSR and it's been superb. Clarity on the optic is good, some of the guys who use much more top end commented on it and passed it around. I think for the money it's a good bet. You seem to see a lot of guys in the US using the successfully so I imagine that demonstrates a good scope.

The BDC seems to work fine, i was using crap FN 556 ammo and it was putting them in the right verticle plane at 600. Is FFP necessary for one of these? Probably not, for longer ranges you'll most likley have the scope dialed up to max mag anyway.

Have you considered the 1-8 Strike Eagle?

what about running a slightly higher mag scope and a dot on the 45'

Nikon are another good choice. I have three Nikon scopes a P-Rimfire and both P308 and an M308 4-12 variables . The glass quality is good, as you would expect from Nikon.

After praising the Vortex warranty last week my 6 Year old Strikefire developed an on but mostly off switching problem as the side switch wouldn’t switch off until it decided it wanted to. So l sent it off to the UK distributor last Friday and yesterday l had a brand spanky cellophane wrapped new one delivered to my door. It was even the series 2 version with the back facing on/off buttons.
